About Us

At the heart of Christian Footsteps is a growing community of people who believe that dignity belongs to everyone. We are a volunteer-powered initiative supporting adults—18 years and older—who are affected by the justice system. This includes individuals who are currently incarcerated, recently released, or supporting a loved one through that journey.

Christian Footsteps is not affiliated with any specific denomination, political ideology, or institution

Christian Footsteps welcomes people of all backgrounds and beliefs.

What unites us is a shared commitment to dignity, empathy, and restorative care. Our volunteers are everyday people—teachers, adult students, retirees, community leaders, and individuals who have walked this path themselves. Together, we form a network of hope that is community-based, values-driven, and focused on lasting transformation.

We walk alongside adults impacted by incarceration, offering emotional support, practical assistance, and a caring presence during one of life's most difficult transitions. Our work is rooted in relationship, fueled by compassion, and guided by a belief in second chances.

  1.

Mentorship & Emotional Support
Every person deserves to be heard and believed in. Our mentorship program connects volunteers with individuals in prison or newly released, often beginning through letters or phone calls. These relationships grow into trusted bonds that inspire hope and accountability.

Mentors provide:

  • A listening ear and encouragement;
  • Help setting and reaching personal goals;
  • Nonjudgmental companionship; and
  • Guidance through major transitions, such as release or parole.

  2.

In-Prison Visitation and Connection
When permitted by correctional facilities, volunteers visit individuals inside, offering a vital connection to the outside world. For those unable to receive visitors, we maintain contact through letters and phone calls. Even a short note can remind someone: You are not forgotten.

  3.

Restorative Justice Programming
We support restorative practices that help individuals take responsibility, understand harm, and work toward healing.

Our programs include:

  • Group dialogues and one-on-one restorative sessions;
  • Reconciliation efforts, when appropriate; and
  • Educational workshops on accountability and empathy.

These initiatives promote genuine behavioral change and reduce recidivism.

  4.

Mental Health & Wellness Support
Many of the people we serve have experienced trauma, grief, or chronic stress. We believe mental health is essential, not optional.

We advocate for:

  • Access to licensed therapists and trauma-informed peer support;
  • Community-based wellness resources; and

Training volunteers to offer emotional safety and trauma-sensitive care.

  5.

Re-Entry and Reintegration Services
Re-entry is one of the most challenging stages after incarceration. We offer hands-on support to help individuals rebuild stability and independence through:

  • Job readiness coaching and interview practice;
  • Access to education and employment opportunities;
  • Housing referrals and mediation; and
  • Budgeting and financial literacy training.

Our focus is on long-term sustainability—not just short-term survival.

  6.

Bail and Parole Support
Bail hearings and parole reviews can be intimidating. We help individuals prepare emotionally and practically by offering:

  • Guidance on communicating clearly and confidently;
  • Help understanding the process and expectations; and
  • Ongoing mentorship after release.

While we do not provide legal advice, we collaborate with attorneys and advocates to complement their work.

  7.

Life Skills Coaching
We provide practical life skills workshops covering:

  • Cooking and nutrition;
  • Budgeting and saving;
  • Conflict resolution and communication;
  • Time management; and
  • Parenting skills.

These essential tools support independence, confidence, and reduced recidivism.

  8.

Family Support & Reconnection
Families are deeply impacted by incarceration. We offer support to help them heal and reconnect through:

  • Facilitated communication and family mediation;
  • Counselling referrals;
  • Letter-writing coordination and phone call support; and
  • Emotional care for spouses, children, and caregivers.

Our goal is to help rebuild broken bridges and strengthen families together.

At Christian Footsteps, we believe transformation begins with compassion.
Together, we're creating pathways of hope, healing, and dignity—for every person, every family, and every community we serve.
